USA prepared to use military force against North Korea
The United States’ UN ambassador has warned the country is prepared to use military force against North Korea ‘if we must’.
It comes after the isolated state tested a ballistic missile that could reach Alaska.
During an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, UN ambassador Nikki Haley said it would prefer to take global diplomatic action against Kim Jong-un.
She said: ‘One of our capabilities lies with our considerable military forces. We will use them if we must, but we prefer not to have to go in that direction.’
She added that North Korea’s actions are ‘quickly closing off the possibility of a diplomatic solution’.
Ms Haley said the US will propose new sanctions on North Korea, and warned countries still doing business with the country that the USA could cut off trade links with them as a result.
North Korea said their missile could carry a large nuclear warhead, while experts believe it could reach Alaska or Hawaii.
Donald Trump has previously promised to stop North Korea from hitting the US with a nuclear missile.
Trump has been urging China, North Korea’s main trading partner and only major ally, to convince Kim to give up the nuclear programme.
